Abstract. Max Weber occupies a central position in the development of sociology. His significance is not merely historical; he remains an ever-present force in contemporary sociology and in this respect he is to be differentiated from Durkheim whose historical importance is widely recognised but is less and less a point of reference in current discussions. This book, in presenting a brief account of the sociological vocation and promise, is designed to serve as a text particularly well suited for courses in which students are also expected to read from primary texts. I had two specific goals in mind when setting out to write Key Ideas in Sociology.

To this day, the name of René Descartes (–) is most associated with his famous quote, “I think, therefore I am.” The phrase appeared in his native French as “je pense, donc je suis” in his seminal treatise, Discourse on the Method.   This essay seeks to contribute to the critical reception of Bloom’s Taxonomy of Educational Objectives by tracing the Taxonomy’s underlying philosophical assumptions. Identifying Bloom’s work as consistent with the legacy of Cartesian thought, I argue that its hierarchy of behavioral objectives provides a framework for certainty and communicability in ascertaining student learning.

It (i) expounds the connection between the ethics of conviction and responsibility Weber outlines in Politics as a Vocation and the ideal-types of value and instrumental rationality he defines in Economy and Society, (ii) examines Weber's commitment to a practical reconciliation of these political ethics.
